Fall armyworm is a lepidopteran pest that feeds on more than 350 plant species. It preferentially feeds on cultivated grasses such as maize, rice, sorghum, sugarcane and wheat, but also attacks legumes, horticultural crops, cotton and other plants. Only detected on maize (Zea mays) in New Caledonia.

Summary

Numerous larvae were found in only one field on the 16th of December 2020. This one should be destroyed as soon as possible. However we consider that eradication will not be possible and then, a management program is under establishment with all the stakeholders.

Danger

FAW is considered as an exotic pest to New Caledonia. Introduction of FAW in New Caledonia could have economic impacts on the maize industry but also on many other productions given the wide range of hosts of FAW.
