Summary

The Forestry Commission, working with Defra, London Health Protection Agencies, Ealing and Richmond Councils and Kew Gardens has formed an Outbreak Management Team and implemented an agreed Action Plan. The aim of the action plan is to eradicate the moth by determining the extent of the infestation through intensive surveys and destruction of nests prior to adult emergence. This is being complemented by a programme of pheromone trapping across London to determine whether the moth has spread. The infestation in south-west London is now considered impossible to eradicate and so has moved to containment. Another outbreak in south-east London is being tackled with a few to eradication - nearly 2000 nests have been destroyed. Another outbreak in Berkshire is thought to be close to eradication. In May 2013 the government announced an attempt to eradicate the moth in some areas - see attached press notice.
