Getting forward - 155th FAO Council supports the International Year of Plant Health in 2020

At its 155th session held in Rome from 5 to 9 December 2016, the FAO Council endorsed a draft Resolution on the observance of 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH).

The resolution, which was presented by Finland to the recent FAO Committee on Agriculture, recognizes the need for healthy plants as the foundation of all life on Earth, ecosystems functions, and food security. The First Steering Committee Meeting on IYPH 2020 Successfully Held in Rome

The first meeting of the Steering Committee (StC) on the International Year of Plant Health in 2020 (IYPH 2020) took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 9 to 11 November 2016, resulting in the development of concrete steps forward to ensuring the proclamation of IYPH 2020. The IYPH StC was established by the eleventh Commission of Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-11) in April 2016 to plan and oversee the implementation of support activities towards IYPH 2020.

The Initial Step towards the International Year of Plant Health in 2020

After the successful FAO Committee on Agriculture (COAG) side-event on 27 September 2016 to mark the official beginning of the campaign to establish an International Year of Plant Health in 2020 (IYPH 2020), COAG formally discussed this subject during their plenary on 29 September 2016, held in Rome, Italy. On Tuesday September 27th a well-attended side session at the 25th meeting of the Committee on Agriculture marked the official beginning of the campaign to establish an International Year of Plant Health in 2020. Towards IYPH 2020: CPM-11 takes the next steps

In April 2016, the Eleventh Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-11), the governing body of the IPPC took further steps towards the proclamation of an International Year of Plant Health in 2020 (IYPH 2020). CPM-11 showed considerable enthusiasm for the progress made in the proclamation process and set-up necessary structures and objectives to guide the proclamation process and to initiate the planning phase.

Finland officially requests FAO resolution for IYPH 2020

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland Mr Kimmo Tiilikainen officially requested that the proposal to have the year 2020 declared as the “International Year of Plant Health” is placed on the agenda of relevant FAO bodies with a view to have the proposal endorsed to this effect at the 40th Session of the FAO Conference in 2017.

The proposal to observe an International Year of Plant Health in 2020 (IYPH 2020) gains more and more momentum in the international plant protection community. The proposal to proclaim the IYPH 2020, adopted at the last meeting of the IPPC Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM), has been further promoted by IPPC contracting parties and the IPPC Secretariat and it received encouraging comments and strong support from a variety of sources.
