The mission of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is to protect cultivated and wild plant resources from pests, thus prompting food security and environmental protection while facilitating safe trade.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), the IPPC community stands together with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other biodiversity-related conventions to strengthen global commitments to preserve nature, enhance food security and facilitate safe trade.

Invasive Alien Species: Invitation to the Online Discussion Forum

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity organized a moderated online discussion forum on matters related to invasive alien species, with the following timetable:

  • 1 - 31 May 2019: Methods for cost-benefit analysis
  • 1 - 30 June 2019: Methods, tools, and measures for identification and minimization of risk of e-commerce
  • 1 - 31 July 2019: Methods, tools and strategy for invasive alien species management under climate change and others
  • 1 - 31 August 2019: Risk analysis on the potential consequences on social, economic and cultural values
  • 1 - 15 September 2019: Wrap up session for synthesis of report

A Keynote Address on Plant Health and Environmental Protection presented by the CBD Executive Secretary at the CPM-13 Opening

The 13th Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-13) of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) officially launched on 16 April 2018 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Dr Cristiana Paşca Palmer, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), was invited to present a keynote address the 2018 IPPC Annual Theme “Plant Health and Environmental Protection”. IPPC Secretariat Meets with CBD Executive Secretary

(Rome, 20 January 2015). Members of the IPPC Secretariat met with Convention on Biological Diversity Executive Secretary Dr. Braulio Dias for a detailed discussion on the relationship between the two Secretariats of the two conventions. Among other things, they discussed revision of the joint work plan, and other opportunities related to the Liaison Group on Biodiversity. Both Secretariats are focused on enhancing their relationship to work on matters of mutual interest as well as to push forward in order to meet the Aichi Targets.

CBD and its Global Taxonomy Initiative is calling for experts to the Training Course on Rapid Identification of Invasive Alien Species

The IPPC and CBD meet for their third joint meeting in Montreal

Photo by CBD Secretariat On 16-17 of September, the IPPC Secretariat participated in a meeting with the Secretariat of Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), in Montreal, Canada. Joined under the Memorandum of Cooperation (2004), the two Secretariats have agreed to cooperate on relevant activities conducted under their frameworks, “to promote synergy, to avoid overlaps and unnecessary duplication, and to ensure effective cooperation.”

Upcoming CBD & IPPC Meeting

The IPPC Secretariat will continue its cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in an upcoming workshop to be held from 11-14 February in the United Arab Emirates. The meeting will address new strategies concerning the issue of invasive alien species in specific countries in West Asia and North Africa as well as the Aichi Biodiversity Target 9 in the Arab region. As country representatives are asked to present their current developments, challenges, and lessons learned in monitoring invasive alien species, the workshop seeks to improve communication and awareness for all parties involved.

The 10th Conference of Parties of the CBD gives special consideration to plant health in the newly adopted Nagoya Protocol and in discussions on invasive alien species

IYOBThe final and most controversial product adopted at the two-week long 10th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biodiversity was the Nagoya Protocol on "Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization". The Nagoya Protocol sets terms on how countries will permit access to genetic resources, share the benefits arising from their use, and cooperate with one another in allegations of misuse.
