The Joint FAO/IAEA Programme assists Member Countries of FAO and IAEA to use nuclear techniques and related biotechnologies for developing improved strategies for sustainable food security.

The Food and Environmental Protection Section of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, recognizing the importance of the use of irradiation as a quarantine treatment in the American region, has decided to organize a regional workshop on this subject. The Workshop will be held at the General Directorate for Plant Health, México City, D.F. from 1st to 5th October 2007.

The workshop will be aimed mainly at senior officials from the American region who are responsible for policies and regulations in the area of phytosanitary measures for food, as well as quarantine officials, representatives of regional plant protection organizations, professionals, and exporters and importers working in related areas. The workshop is open to professionals from Member States of FAO and the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA). The nominees should come from governments or regional institutions.
