IPPC Pest Alert – Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4

IPPC Pest Alert – Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4

Date of Issue: 19 December 2025

Reason for this alert

The National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of Ecuador (AGROCALIDAD) has confirmed the presence of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (Foc TR4) in a banana production area in El Oro Province, Ecuador, following laboratory confirmation. The detection was reported through official public communications from AGROCALIDAD on December 18, 2025.

In response to the detection, Ecuador declared a phytosanitary emergency for the banana sector for an initial period of six months. This measure enables the mobilization of national and international resources to strengthen epidemiological containment, reinforce biosecurity measures, and implement technical control actions while minimizing impacts on producers. The identified outbreak remains confined and is subject to strict official control in accordance with national and international phytosanitary protocols.

Foc TR4 is the causal agent of Fusarium wilt of banana, a highly destructive soil-borne disease affecting banana, plantain, and other Musa species. Due to its severe economic impact, long-term persistence in soil, and limited management options, the Pest Outbreak and Alert Response Systems (POARS) Steering Group assessed and qualified Foc TR4 as an emerging pest of global concern.
