FAO and IPPC supporting NENA Countries to boost trade facilitation and enforce rigorous phytosanitary measures against invasive plant pests

21-24 August 2017: Fifteen Near East and North Africa countries have been gathered in Tunis (Tunisia) from the 21st to the 24th of August 2017 at the invitation of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat and the Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization for the Near East and North Africa Region (FAO-RNE). The annual regional workshop aims at strengthening phytosanitary capacities for effective enforcement of internationally harmonized standards for phytosanitary measures to prevent the introduction of plant pests to their countries, while facilitating the international trade of plant products.

Test the pest! - Two new IPPC Diagnostic Protocols adopted

The IPPC Secretariat is happy to announce that there are two new diagnostic protocols (DPs), which have been adopted by the Standards Committee (SC) on behalf of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) as the DP Notification Period just closed on the 15 August 2017. These two newly adopted DPs are:

• DP 23: Phytophthora ramorum (2004-013)

• DP 24: Tomato spotted wilt virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus and Watermelon silver mottle virus (2004-019)

These two newly adopted DPs should help countries prevent the entry or establishment of pests from some of the important commodities traded globally, such as many species of ...

The validation Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation workshop for Madagascar receives the support of the Government

Moving towards development of an IPPC Monitoring and Evaluation Framework

Leanne Stewart, IPPC IRSS manager, met with Cecile Kusters of the Centre for Development and Innovation from 19 – 20 June 2017 at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. The purpose of this meeting was to finalize the draft Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Matrix and indicator categories, as well as the Theory of Change (TOC) schematic.

Meeting participants reviewed the draft matrix and updated it to include additional targets, key evaluation questions, additional indicators and methods of data collection. The ToC schematics and narrative were also reviewed and updated.

TPPT continues ground-breaking work to protect the world’s plant resources

The Technical Panel for Phytosanitary Treatments (TPPT) just ended their annual meeting in Vienna, Austria (17 – 21 July 2017). The meeting was hosted by the Joint FAO/International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture and chaired by Mr Matthew Smith (Australia). Orlando Sosa, Senior Implementation Officer and Chiluba Mwape, Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) Facilitator facilitated the second PCE workshop for Kenya and Somalia. The workshop was held in Nairobi Kenya, from 6-10 June, 2017. Chiluba Mwape was responsible for conducting Kenya’s follow-up to Kenya’s first PCE application. Orlando Sosa, with the support of the PCE Facilitator Chiluba Mwape, was responsible for training of the participants from Somaliland and Puntland on the methods of problem analysis, SWOT Analysis and the Logical Framework Approach.

Teamwork is the yearly theme for the IPPC Secretariat in 2017. To emphasize this, on 14 July 2017, a brainstorming session on teamwork and team spirit was organized during the 2017 Mid-year meeting of the IPPC Secretariat. The brainstorming session was chaired by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary, moderated by four keynote presenters, Ms Sarah Brunel, Ms Céline Germain, Ms Alejandra Jimenez Tabares, Mr Piotr Wlodarczyk, and attended by all IPPC Secretariat’s staff.

The 2017 Mid-Year meeting of the IPPC Secretariat was held on 14 July 2017 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. The objectives of the meeting were presenting the achievements of the first semester and plans for the second semester of 2017, while also conducting a team work exercise.

International Year of Plant Health goes to New York

The 40th Session of the FAO Conference, the governing body of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, has approved on 5 July 2017 a resolution with the aim to declare the year 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH 2020). The proposal for the IYPH 2020, which was initiated by Finland in 2015, received considerable support by numerous delegations.
