The IPPC Secretariat, FAO and Uzbek stakeholders convened a plant protection workshop within the framework of the FAO project “Support to the Improvement of the National Seed, Plant Variety Protection and Phytosanitary Legislation in Uzbekistan” (TCP/UZB/3602). The workshop was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 13 – 15 November 2017.

IPPC Secretariat Implementation Officer Ketevan Lomsadze, together with FAO Technical Officer Hafiz Muminjanov and FAO Legal Officer Carmen Bullon delivered the plant protection workshop. The 2nd Advisory Committee meeting on the IPPC ePhyto Project and the experts meeting of the IPPC ePhyto Business Model were held on the 5th and 6th of December 2017, respectively, at the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

The 2017 Meeting of the IPPC Technical Panel for the Glossary

The IPPC Technical Panel for the Glossary (TPG) meeting was hosted by the Italian National Plant Protection Organization on 4-7 December 2017 in Rome, Italy. Mr Federico Sòrgoni from the “Ministero delle Politiche Agricole Alimentari e Forestali” warmly welcomed the eight TPG present members representing all six official FAO languages. The meeting was chaired by Mr John Hedley (New Zealand), with Ms Laurence Bouhot-Delduc (France) as Steward and Mr Ebbe Nordbo (Denmark) as Rapporteur. The CPM Bureau virtual meeting was held on 12th December 2017 with participation of five Bureau members as well as the representatives from the IPPC Secretariat and FAO legal office. On 11 December 2017, Rome, Italy. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) launched, at FAO-HQs, it’s new implementation oversight body, the Implementation and Capacity Development Committee (IC). The establishment of this new committee is a milestone event for the IPPC as it signals a greater emphasis towards the implementation of the IPPC and its standards.

The first meeting dedicated to the development of a Pest Free Area Guide was held in Rome Italy the 20 – 24 November 2017. The meeting was organized by the IPPC Secretariat and chaired by Mr Kenneth A. The IPPC Standards Committee progress important standards

The Standards Committee (SC), with 27 participants, representing all seven FAO regions, met between 13-17 November 2017 at FAO-HQ in Rome, Italy. The SC led by their Chairperson, Mr Ezequiel FERRO (Argentina), had fruitful discussions on topics of major concern to the phytosanitary world.

Particularly, a long sought compromise was reached on the reorganization of the suite of fruit fly standards. The reorganization will be presented to the CPM-13 (2018). The reorganization should help countries, especially developing countries, have a better and more logical framework to implement the phytosanitary measures related to fruit flies.

A National Workshop on Sea Containers Phytosanitary Standards was organized by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine (AQSIQ) of the Peoples’ Republic of China, from 8-9 November 2017, in Shanghai, China. This workshop was held on the occasion of the first meeting of the IPPC Sea Container Task Force (SCTF) organized from 6-10 November 2017, in Shanghai, China. The first meeting of the IPPC Sea Container Task Force (SCTF) was held from 6-10 November 2017, in Shanghai, China. The meeting was jointly organized by the IPPC Secretariat, and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine (AQSIQ) of the Peoples’ Republic of China, and hosted by Shanghai Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (SHCIQ). Mr Jingyuan Xia, IPPC Secretary, opened the meeting, Ms. Yijuan Li, Deputy Director General (DDG) of the AQSIQ presented a welcome address on behalf of the AQSIQ, and Mr. Yucheng Zheng, DDG of the (SHCIQ), delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the (SHCIQ).
