In order to meet food production demand over the next 40 years, farmers in the developing world must double food production, a challenge made even more daunting by the combined effects of climate change and growing competition for land, water and energy. Sustainable crop production intensification (SCPI) represents a major shift from the homogeneous model of crop production to knowledge-intensive, often location-specific, farming systems.

IPPC Secretariat launches new Online Comment System for 2011 member consultation for draft ISPMs

The IPPC Secretariat launched the new Online Comment System (OCS) on 20 June 2011, which also marked the opening of the 2011 member consultation period on draft ISPMs. All seven draft ISPMs have been uploaded into the system in English, French, and Spanish and are open for commenting using the OCS. The Secretariat has sent all IPPC Official Contact Points a username and password to login to the OCS. Important milestone for electronic certification in the IPPC (ePhyto)

An Open-Ended Working Group on IPPC OEWG on Electronic Certification was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, from Tuesday 07 June to Friday 10 June, 2011. The meeting was attended by participants from 27 countries and 2 regional plant protection organizations.

An increasing number of countries are converting from paper systems to electronic certification systems. A global ePhyto standard will greatly facilitate the inter-governmental exchange of phytosanitary certificates with improved security and often large gains in efficiencies. Official Opening of the Ambient and Cold Storage Facilities at the Agricultural Complex in Montego Bay, Jamaica 26th of May

The Expert Working Group(EWG) in Phytosanitary Capacity Development was kindly invited to the Offical opening of the Ambient and Cold Storage Facilities at the Agricultural Complex in Montego Bay, Jamaica. established in Sangster International Airport. The complex functions as a phytosanitary inspection, certification and treatment facility complemented by cargo handling capabilities.

2nd Meeting of Expert Working Group on Phytosanitary Capacity Development, 23'“27 May 2011, Montego Bay, Jamaica

The second Meeting of the Expert Working Group (EWG) on Phytosanitary Capacity Development took place in Montego Bay, Jamaica, 23-27th of May 2011. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) had together with each FAO region delegates participating (unfortunately except Africa). Two observers representing the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture(IICA) participated in the meeting.

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Expert Working Group on Phytosanitary Capacity Development was created to review and refine the Phytosanitary Capacity Development Operational Plan and to assist the Secretariat with developing national phytosanitary capacity.
