IPPC and World Bank Seek to Increase Collaboration

On November 18, 2016, the IPPC Secretariat welcomed Mr. William John Gain, Global Program Manager for the Trade Logistics Advisory Service at the World Bank, for a meeting at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Mr. Gain visited the IPPC Secretariat for extensive discussions on collaboration between the two organizations in matters of trade facilitation. The 28th IPPC Technical Consultation among Regional Plant Protection Organizations Successfully Held in Morocco

The 28th Technical Consultation (TC) among the Regional Plant Protection Organizations (RPPOs) was held from 14th to 18th November 2016 in Rabat, Morocco. The meeting was organized by the Near East Plant Protection Organization (NEPPO), with the presence of, for the first time, all 9 RPPOs and a representative from the Caribbean by the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA).

The IPPC contribution to the Advanced Course on Implementing the WTO Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement

The Advanced Course on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) took place at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 17 October to 4 November 2016. The objective the SPS course was to enable government officials to better implement the WTO-SPS agreement on food safety, animal and plant health measures. The Course was held in French and represents the highest level of training (“level 3”). It was attended by 25 government officials from WTO members and observers working in the field of sanitary and phytosanitary measures.

A Record Number of International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) Moving towards Adoption

The Standards Committee (SC) met from 14-18 November 2016 at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Five International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) were approved to be adopted by the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) at its next meeting in April 2017. This was just after the SC also approved 11 phytosanitary treatments to go forward for adoption.

Fruit Flies: conclusions of the meeting of the Tephritid workers held in Buenos Aires

With great success and large attendance of participants, the 9th Meeting of the Tephritid Workers of the Western Hemisphere was held in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 16 to 21 October 2016.

313 participants from 26 countries attended the Meeting, including representatives of the scientific-academic sphere, public bodies and companies supplying inputs and services.

The meeting was structured in 11 sessions, with 63 oral presentations and 97 posters, ranging from biology and the impact of global change to action programs, including the development and use of support technologies for surveillance and control of pest populations.

The First Steering Committee Meeting on IYPH 2020 Successfully Held in Rome

The first meeting of the Steering Committee (StC) on the International Year of Plant Health in 2020 (IYPH 2020) took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 9 to 11 November 2016, resulting in the development of concrete steps forward to ensuring the proclamation of IYPH 2020. The IYPH StC was established by the eleventh Commission of Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-11) in April 2016 to plan and oversee the implementation of support activities towards IYPH 2020.

The Second Meeting of the IPPC ePhyto Industry Advisory Group (IAG) Held in Belgium

The Second meeting of the IPPC ePhyto Industry Advisory Group (IAG) met on 10 November 2016 in Brussels Belgium, including the members from various international plant and plant product industry associations. The objective and activity of the meeting were to provide advice to the IPPC Secretariat on the development of an ePhyto Solution.

The Asian Workshop on Implementation of e-SPS Certification Systems Held in Thailand

The Asian Workshop on Implementation of e-SPS Certification Systems was hosted at the United Nation’s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP)’s headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand from 1-3 November 2016. The Workshop was attended by Mr. Shane Sela (the IPPC Secretariat’s ePhyto Project Manager) and Ms. Kenza LeMentec (the Programme Officer of STDF), as well as the eleven countries from the Asian region and experts from the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Secretariat, United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and several authorities in electronic phytosanitary certification.

The 4th Training Workshop on the PCE Facilitators for the IPPC Contracting Parties successfully organized in Italy

Held in Ronciglione, Italy, from October 17th – 28th 2016, the 4th training workshop on the Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) facilitators brought together eight carefully selected phytosanitary experts from Francophone Africa and 2 lawyers. Workshop participants were trained to broaden and enhance their expertise in facilitating the application of the PCE tool. This two-week intensive training was conducted in an effort to improve existing or planned phytosanitary capacity systems with the financial support of the STDF.

Citrus greening: imaging system can detect infection before symptoms show

A time-lapse polarized imaging system may help citrus growers detect greening before the plant's leaves show symptoms, which should help growers as they try to fend off the deadly disease, a new University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences study shows.
