CALL FOR EXPERTS – To proofread translations of IPPC guides and training materials

Posted on Mon, 03 Oct 2022, 07:44

Deadline on Sat, 19 Nov 2022, 23:59

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat is soliciting:

Purpose

The purpose of this call is to establish a pool of experts for each FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) who are willing to proofread translated IPPC Guides and training materials on an on-going, ad-hoc basis.

Timeframe: November 2022 on-going

Frequency: as needed (ad-hoc)

Rationale

Ensuring that all IPPC guides and training materials are available in all FAO languages is an IPPC Secretariat priority, but we need assistance from members of the phytosanitary community to do this!

IPPC guides and training materials are generally developed in English, but many have been translated to Arabic, French, Spanish and Russian. Translating these products depends on the generous support of contracting parties, partners and donors. Each translation needs to be proofread prior to publication to ensure that the translated document is an accurate reflection of the original publication and that it is consistent with the Glossary of phytosanitary terms and uses language and terminology that is appropriate for the target audience.

The new language pools will provide a list of phytosanitary experts to assist with proofreading and to ensure that translations of IPPC Guides and training materials are the best possible.

Language verification process for IPPC Guides and training materials

The IPPC Secretariat will invite members of the relevant language pool to proofread an IPPC Guide or training material after it has been translated.

Practical Expertise Requested

Experts should have knowledge of the IPPC, ISPMs and CPM recommendations and have extensive practical experience related to plant health and working in an NPPO, RPPO or international organization.

Experts should be a native speaker of one of the following FAO official languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish.

Experts should be recommended by their national plant protection organization (NPPO), regional plant protection organization (RPPO) or by an international organization for participation in one of the following language pools: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish.
