Posted on Mon, 07 Mar 2011, 08:10

GrainsEach year, the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures holds a scientific session to consider emerging issues, such as new technologies or new pest threats. Past scientific sessions have addressed issues such as the potential impact of climate change on pest spread, food aid as a pathway for the transboundary movement of pests, aquatic plants as pests, and flaws in the current system for preventing pest spread.

Mountain pine beetle damageEric Allen, a research scientist for the Canadian Forest Service, will describe how pest risks associated with Mountain Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) are virtually eliminated as harvested trees are transformed into wood products for international trade. He will explain how information on the biology of this pest is used to provide guidance to scientists, regulators and the forest industry for the development of effective pest mitigation processes.
