Strengthening the Bilateral Cooperation of the IPPC with the United States of America

On 26 July 2018 an IPPC delegation composed of Dr. Jingyuan Xia (IPPC Secretary), Mr. Craig Fedchock (IPPC Adviser) and Dr. Shoki AlDobai (IPPC Integration and Support Team Lead) met at FAO-HQs with representatives from the US Mission to Rome-based UN Agencies, Mr. Tommie Williams (incoming Minister Counselor for Agriculture) and Mr. Bryce Quick (outgoing Counselor for Agriculture) at FAO-HQs.

A Keynote Address on Plant Health and Environmental Protection presented by the CBD Executive Secretary at the CPM-13 Opening

The 13th Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-13) of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) officially launched on 16 April 2018 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Dr Cristiana Paşca Palmer, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), was invited to present a keynote address the 2018 IPPC Annual Theme “Plant Health and Environmental Protection”. عقد الاجتماع الثنائي حول تعزيز التعاون ما بين الاتفاقية الدولية لوقاية النباتات والمنظمة العالمية للجمارك في الرابع من آذار/مارس 2016 في المقر الرئيس للمنظمة العالمية للجمارك في الاتحاد الأوروبي في بروكسل، بلجيكا. وتألف وفد الاتفاقية، من السيد جينغ يوان شيا (أمين الاتفاقية)، ومنسق الاتفاقية السيد كريج فيدشوك. وتألف وفد المنظمة العالمية للجمارك من السيد كونيو ميكوريا (أمين عام المنظمة العالمية للجمارك)، والسيد ألان هاريسون (المسؤول التنفيذيي لمكتب الأمين العام) والسيد ثيو هيسيلنك (المسؤول الفني عن الامتثال والتيسير) وكان الهدف الرئيس من الإجتماع مناقشة إمكانية توقيع اتفاقية بخصوص التعاون ما بين الاتفاقية الدولية والمنظمة العالمية للجمارك.

The New Zealand Government has announced a new tool in the fight against unwanted pests with its approval of a formal partnership agreement with agriculture industries. IPPC/CABI Plantwise Collaboration Initiated

In recent efforts to improve collaboration on joint activities, the IPPC and CABI Plantwise have agreed to initiate secondments between their organizations to increase transparency and effectiveness. The IPPC Secretariat at FAO Headquarters in Rome welcomes Ms. Katherine Cameron, Knowledge Bank Development Manager for Plantwise, to assist in the guidance and approval of a joint work plan that will further implement these efforts.

Improving coordination and cooperation with the WTO

Recent discussions between the Secretariats for the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and the World Trade Organization’s SPS Committee were held with the objective of improving coordination and cooperation. As the IPPC has a formal role of standard setting for plant health within the SPS Agreement, it is essential that cooperation and coordination is optimized between the two Organizations at all times. The Secretariats discussed a wide range of subjects including increasing awareness and support for each other’s programmes regarding capacity development, standard setting, information exchange and dispute settlement.
