The Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP) is a flagship of the IPPC Secretariat to strengthen the technical capacity of Africa’s phytosanitary personnel in national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) and their national partners. Through specialized training in pest surveillance and detection, promoting use of harmonized survey protocols, delivery of cutting edge digital tools and field survey supplies, APP equips phytosanitary personnel to proactively monitor, rapidly detect and effectively respond and recover from?some of the most significant plant pests threatening food security, safe trade, economic stability and environmental health in Africa.
Launched in 2023, the programme is being implemented in 20 African countries namely: Algeria, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Chad, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Republic of Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
This side session will provide a unique opportunity for CPM-20 delegates to reflect on the APP’s progress and explore pathways for expanding the programme to other regions. Four participating countries— Egypt, Mali, South Africa and Uganda—will present their progress achievements, benefits and lessons learned, showcasing national-level impact and ownership. Delegates will also receive an update on key APP milestones and the programme’s growing contribution to stronger phytosanitary capacity and plant health systems.
