7 June 2019, Windsor – The training course for potential facilitators for using the Beyond Compliance tools under the project MTF/INT/336/STF “Rolling out Systems Approach globally – sharing tools for enhanced application of Systems Approach and market negotiation on plant pest risk” was recently completed.

Phytosanitary treatment options for plant health: the IPPC Technical Panel on Phytosanitary Treatments meeting

12 July 2019, Vienna - Phytosanitary treatments (PTs) are essential for controlling regulated pests in articles and goods, especially those that are regulated for trade on an international scale. The IPPC PTs are an alternative to methyl bromide and help protect biodiversity. They provide the minimum requirements necessary to control regulated pests; and offer guidance on specific plant health treatments issues.

A new version of the IPPC Online Comment System launched today for opening of 2019 consultations

The IPPC Online Comment System (OCS) was upgraded to a new 6.4 version today, 1st July 2019. The new user interface and enhanced system’s features will facilitate the process of drafting and submitting comments by IPPC contact points.

The main enhancement for users include:

• In-line editor of comments (fixed right-hand comment box disappeared, with improved system’s usability).

• Possibility to format the text of the document (basic fonts, italic, bold, underlined, insertion of special characters, etc.).

• You can always edit your comment and delete your own comments.

• Access to the paragraph history.

• Like/dislike comments feature.

The IPPC Generic ePhyto National System will go live on the 15th of July

The IPPC Secretariat is proud to announce that on July 15th the Generic National System component of the IPPC ePhyto Solution will go live! This means that countries without their own national electronic certification system who wish to join the IPPC ePhyto Solution can begin their registration process and once fully prepared, can join the IPPC ePhyto Solution through the use of the GeNS. The GeNS is a centralized web- based system that any country without their own electronic certification system can use to connect to the ePhyto Hub in order to produce, send and receive ePhytos. Minimizing the impact of plant pests - a global surveillance system for crop diseases

28 June 2019 - Each year an estimated 10 to16 percent of global harvests are lost to plant pests and diseases, at an estimated cost of over USD 220 billion. Pests, pathogens and weeds cause the loss of more than 40 percent of the world’s food supply. A global surveillance system for monitoring and improving response to crop diseases and pests could help prevent some of these losses.

Making progress on international commodity standards for phytosanitary measures

21 June 2019, Rome – An important element of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC)’s work is to safeguard agriculture and facilitate safe trade. As part of this effort, the new IPPC Strategic Framework 2002-2030 includes developing commodity and pathway specific standards. Much progress on this topic was made during the second meeting of the IPPC focus group on commodity standards with its newly revised terms of reference (ToRs).

14 June 2019, Rome – The Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) Bureau met in Rome from 10 to 14 June 2019 to focus on how to implement the IPPC Strategic Framework for 2020-2030.

The IPPC Secretary Mr. Jingyuan Xia highlighted that when planning activities it was important to link the IPPC Strategic Framework for 2020-2030 and the five-year investment plan. He also stressed the need to mobilize resources for both the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) and the IPPC ePhyto solution work programmes.
