3rd finding in UK. This one in the Upper Tees Valley National Nature Reserve
Краткое описание

An investigation into the condition of Juniperus communis was carried out at the Upper Teesdale Natural Nature Reserve by scientists from Forest Research in November 2011. The Reserve is a Special Area of Conservation as it has the second most extensive area of juniper habitat in UK, comprising 200 ha. Photographic evidence from the Reserve shows die-back and decline of juniper dating from 2006. The source of infection is unknown.

The investigation revealed numerous juniper bushes showing symptoms of dieback apparently associated with lower stem and root necrosis. Detailed examination revealed infection by P. austrocedrae and was confirmed through both isolation and molecular diagnosis; samples comprised root and stem phloem lesions taken from six trees at different locations on the site.

A further suspect find in Devon, is currently being investigated. Surveys to determine the extent of the symptomatic juniper are being carried out. Once the extent of the infection has been determined a containment notice will be issued and no plant material or soil will be permitted to be removed from the site.

All field staff and individuals working for the owner and tenant of the site will adopt biosecurity measures that will prevent further spread of this harmful organism.

A wider survey is in preparation to determine whether the organism is affecting juniper elsewhere in the UK.
