New publication: Field survey guidance for Bactrocera spp.

Posted on Wed, 27 Aug 2025, 12:54

The IPPC Secretariat is pleased to inform the plant health community of a new publication titled "Field survey guidance for Bactrocera spp."

This field survey guidance, developed through the IPPC's Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP), provides clear protocols for NPPO technical staff to monitor and identify Bactrocera spp. (Fruit fly), a major pest devastating fruit crops such as mango. With visual aids and recommended fruit fly traps, this guide aims to enhance effective detection, sample collection and identification of fruit fly species, to inform phytosanitary decisions and safeguard plant health. Regular use of these protocols alongside APP digital pest surveillance tools will strengthen early warning systems and enhance Africa’s resilience against pests of regulatory, economic and environmental significance.
