The IPPC is spearheading the development of commodity International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) aimed at promoting harmonized and technically justified measures to meet import regulations and address complex phytosanitary issues related to specific commodities or pest- introduction pathways.
These standards fall under ISPM 46- Commodity-specific standards for phytosanitary measures. The first annex— covering the international movement of fresh mango (Mangifera indica) —was adopted by the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) in 2025, and many others are expected to be adopted by 2030, to reach the IPPC Strategic Framework for the decade.
This session will thus present the IPPC's strategic approach to developing commodity-specific ISPMs, outlining the purposes, benefits and principles of these “next generation” of IPPC standards, while also giving an opportunity for delegates to learn more about the Technical Panel for Commodity Standards (TPCS) and its work programme. In addition, the session will facilitate interactive discussions among the IPPC Secretariat, TPCS members, external partners, and Contracting Parties, with the aim of enhancing participants’ awareness and strengthening their capacity to leverage these new standards to improve phytosanitary systems, facilitate trade, and secure new market access.
