Resumen

In August, 2015, Globodera pallida (pale cyst nematode (PCN)) was detected in Aabashiri city, Hokkaido, the most northern prefecture of Japan. This is the first known detection of PCN in Japan. As soon as the report was received, necessary measures to prevent the spread of PCN have been conducted in Abashiri city and its neighboring areas. Official survey was conducted in order to delimit the infected area, and as a result, PCN was detected in 11 sections, in Abashiri city. Following the results of the survey, Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) designated the 11 sections in Abashiri city where PCN was detected as the emergency control area and conducts official control measures based on the Plant Protection Act. The official control measures include control measures by a combination of soil fumigation and cultivation of trap crops in infected fields, prohibition of movement of underground parts of Solanaceae plants and underground parts of other plants with soil attached from the emergency control area to outside of the area and prohibition of cultivation of Solanaceae plants excluding trap crop in the infected fields.
