Dr Derek Belton, International Coordination Manager, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), New Zealand, has informed the IPPC that a pitch canker (Fusarium circinatum) simulation exercise will take place in his country between 5 and 7 October 2005.

Biosecurity New Zealand will lead the exercise. The exercise is intended to test and improve national capability and readiness to deal with an outbreak of a forest exotic disease. This exercise will be based on a simulated pitch canker outbreak at a commercial nursery in the central North Island.

The general objectives are:

b. Ensure that sufficient capability exists to respond effectively to an incursion within a commercial forest environment;

c. Act as a training exercise for participants;

d. Improve response capability in the forestry sector;

e. Strengthen links between Biosecurity New Zealand, commercial forestry and service providers.
