Devon Valley area near Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Resumen

Two B. dorsalis specimens, one female and one male, were collected from the Devon Valley area near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape Province, on 22 March and 13 April 2018, respectively. The fruit fly specimens were identified as Bactrocera dorsalis by the nominated local fruit fly expert and reported to Directorate Plant Health, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in accordance with the Agricultural Pests Act, 1983 (Act No. 36 of 1983) and the National Action Plan.

Phytosanitary actions were implemented to control the movement of fruit from the area under delimitation. Eradication, which included the application of weekly protein bait sprays and the deployment of male annihilation blocks in the quarantine area, was carried out for at least 8 weeks. There was no further detection of B. dorsalis since 13 April 2018. Until 11 July 2018, this represents a period of no detection of B. dorsalis for 4.75 generations, based on a calculation of accumulated degree days. A successful eradication of Bactrocera dorsalis is therefore declared for the Devon Valley area. The status of the pest in this area is: Eradicated.

Any immediate or potential danger of Bactrocera dorsalis has been prevented by successful eradication.
