Row of computersThe issuance of phytosanitary certificates is one of the key responsibilities of National Plant Protection Organizations. In 2009, an international meeting on e-certification was held in Canada - click here to learn more. Following up on this meeting, the 5th session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures discussed the current status of electronic certification within the framework of the IPPC, challenges and benefits. In particular, it was observed that while some countries have made considerable progress with respect to implementation of e-certification, a common understanding is lacking. It was agreed that this topic should be given high priority and should be addressed through a group on Phyto eCert which would meet annually for the next two years, pending the availability of extra-budgetary resources.

The first meeting will be held using NZD 50,000 provided by New Zealand s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF). The meeting is tentatively scheduled for early 2011. More information will be posted on the IPP as it becomes available.

This meeting will facilitate the exchange of experiences and improve collaboration and cooperation between interested countries. The aim will be to have an international standardized approach that could be implemented on a bilateral basis.
