Summary

In October 2022, Sweet potato weevils (Cylas formicarius) were detected in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. Immediately after receiving the report, the NPPO conducted surveillance in order to delimit the infested area and took immediate control measures. The NPPO designated the control area and pest control measures for emergency control under the Plant Protection Act. It will be entry into force from 19 March 2023 by the ministerial ordinance. The control measures include: prohibition of cultivation of host plants in the designated area, restriction of movement or disinfestation/destruction of fresh stems, fresh leaves, and underground parts of host plants.

Danger
Sweet potato weevil is considered as a significant and damaging pest of sweet potato and is a quarantine pest for Japan. In Japan, Sweet potato weevil is present only in some parts of Southwestern Islands and Ogasawara Islands, and the movement of host plants is restricted by the Plant Protection Act.
