Diagnostic protocol for Potato Spindle Tuber Viroid, PSTVd

Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is a quarantine pathogen of Australia and poses a serious threat to Australia's potato and tomato crops. Host range PSTVd has been detected in avocado (Persea americana) (Querci et al., 1997), sweet cucumber (Solanum mericatum) and an Australian native Solanum spp. (Behjatnia et al. 1996). Several important Solanaceous crops, potato (Solanum tuberosum), tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) and eggplant (Solanum melongena), are also natural hosts of PSTVd. The viroid has also been reported on cape gooseberry (Ward et al., 2010, Verhoeven et al. 2009) and on ornamental hosts such as Brugmansia suaveolens, Solanum jasminoides (Verhoeven 2008) and Streptosolen jamesonii Yellow’ (Verhoeven 2008). Experimentally, 94 plant species in 31 families have been shown to be susceptible (Jeffries 1998).
