Call for the expression of interest by national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) to share their challenges, experiences and best practices in managing pest risks of sea containers during the CPM-14 side session “SEA CHANGE FOR SEA CONTAINERS”

The Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is calling for the expression of interest by national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) wishing to share their experiences related to managing pest risks of sea containers in a side session to be held during the 14th meeting of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) from 1-5 April 2019 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

This side session, entitled Sea Change for Sea Containers will be held on 4 April 2019 at 13:00 – 14:30, Iran room (B016) and is intended to highlight the complexity and challenges of sea container logistics. The risks posed to plant resources by both contaminated containers and their cargos will be described and the various efforts made by governments and industry to reduce these risks will be discussed.

The deadline for submissions is 14 March 2019.

This side session presents an opportunity for countries to share experiences and best practices. It will allow them to gain knowledge to help them develop national outreach and awareness campaigns. Presentations will include best practices for promoting the use of the Cargo Transport Units (CTU) Code, joint industry cleaning guidelines, and other related practices.

The NPPOs who wish to report on their challenges and successes, and provide country-specific case studies, information on targeting methods, experiences collecting data, and ideas for more cost-effective approaches, are invited to submit their one-page summary to Ketevan Lomsadze ([email protected]) by 14 March 2019 with the following information:

Submissions will be evaluated by the organizers and a maximum of four cases will be selected. Selected NPPOs will be contacted and provided with the opportunity to share information (max 3-4 minutes) during the side session.
