Summary

Garlic allexiviruses was detected in August 2011. It is likely to be widely distributed as plants are vegetatively propagated. Viruses in this genus are restricted to Allium spp., spread by mites and persist in propagative material. All garlic is infected with some viruses, as result of being vegetatively propagated

These viruses may have a detrimental impact on the production of Allium spp. although quantification of the potential impact and economic significance is unclear
