Short Description

Public consultation has commenced for the draft First Points of Entry Regulation under the Biosecurity Act 2015.

The Australian Government, through the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, has released the draft First Points of Entry Regulation under Australia’s new Biosecurity Act 2015 for public consideration. The exposure draft of the regulation was published on the department’s website on 8 January 2016. Consultation is open for a minimum of 60 days.

The First Points of Entry Regulation prescribes requirements for ports and landing places to be determined a first point of entry and conditions for the variation or revocation of a first point. This regulation also establishes biosecurity release zones to reduce regulation at international mail centres and passenger terminals.

The release of this draft regulation gives interested clients, stakeholders and trading partners the opportunity to provide feedback on how the regulation will work in practice when the new Act takes effect on 16 June 2016.

The department has also published on its website supporting material for the Approved Arrangements and Infringement Notices regulations currently out for comment.

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is working in consultation with the Department of Health to develop and implement new legislation to replace the Quarantine Act 1908, including the draft First Points of Entry Regulation.
