Summary

surveys were carried out in major banana and plantain producing areas in Caeroon in 2008. Banana Bunchy Top Diseases caused by BBTV is emerging as a serious threat to banana and plantain (Musa sp.)production in West Central and southern Africa. The virus readily spreads in vegetative material such as corms and suckers. It also relies on the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa, its sole biological vector.Aphid control will play a significant role in BBTD management.

Danger
This is the first report of the occurrence of BBTV in the Western and Southern regions of Cameroon, neighboring north of Gabon, suggests a possible spread of the virus from Gabon. There is need to monitor other countries of West Africa for BBTV and enforce quarantine measures to prevent further spread through infected suckers from endemic areas.
