Summary

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recently confirmed the presence of golden nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) in a single field (72 hectares) on a farm in southwestern Manitoba.

This is the first detection of the pest in Manitoba. Golden nematode is present in some other Canadian provinces as well as numerous other countries.

The field has been placed under official control and the CFIA’s investigation is ongoing to fully delimit the scope of the pest presence. There is no indication that potatoes produced in the field have moved outside of Canada during the 10-year traceback period.

Golden nematode is a quarantine pest under Canada’s Plant Protection Act. It can significantly affect the yields of potatoes and other host crops.

Following International Plant Protection Convention principles and the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures 8 - Determination of pest status in an area, golden nematode is considered present: not widely distributed and under official control in Canada.

L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) a récemment confirmé la présence du nématode doré (Globodera rostochiensis) dans un seul champ (72 hectares) d’une ferme du sud-ouest du Manitoba.

Il s’agit de la première détection cet organisme nuisible au Manitoba. Le nématode doré est présent dans certaines autres provinces canadiennes ainsi que dans de nombreux autres pays.

Le champ a été placé sous contrôle officiel et l’enquête de l’ACIA est en cours afin de délimiter pleinement l’étendue de la présence de l’organisme nuisible. Rien n’indique que les pommes de terre produites dans ce champ aient été exportées à l’extérieur du Canada au cours de la période de retraçage de 10 ans.

Le nématode doré est un organisme nuisible de quarantaine en vertu de la Loi sur la protection des végétaux du Canada. Il peut avoir un impact significatif sur les rendements des pommes de terre et d’autres cultures hôtes.

Conformément aux principes de la Convention internationale pour la protection des végétaux et à la Norme internationale pour les mesures phytosanitaires no 8 – Détermination de la situation d’un organisme nuisible dans une zone, le nématode doré est considéré comme présent: non largement disséminée et faisant l’objet d’une lutte officielle au Canada.
