Summary

The Dactylopius opuntiae was first confirmed in September 2016 on Opuntia plants in Famagusta district. The presence of the pest was identified by the laboratory of Food and Environment Agency (FERA Science Ltd) of UK in collaboration with Department of Agriculture (Cyprus). It has since been observed in several locations across the district. Statutory action will be taken in the wider region including the use of insecticides, surveys around the place of finding and through the whole island, etc.

Danger
The severity of the outbreak in the concerned area is estimated from medium to high. The area is under surveillance for a more precise estimation, although the current climatic conditions are expected to limit the organism’s development and the typical symptoms.
