I would like to inform you that Latvia has started studies carried out by Latvian University of Agriculture on thermal treatment process of wooden packaging materials only in September. The objectives of the studies are:

To obtain experimentally approved data on the duration of the heat permeability in wooden packaging material depending on tic wood species, thickness of sawn material, stack type, rate of air stream, humidity of timber and applied treatment temperatures.

To develop coherences for duration of thermal treatment cycle depending of treated timber specie and density.

To develop recommendations necessary to optimize applied regimes in treatment of wood packaging material.

To evaluate the impact of presence of bark to the invasion of insects in thermally treated material.

After the experiments all obtained data will be processed and the first results will be available not earlier than in December in 2005. Fully summarized information will be available in 2006.
