Description of the mark

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), the country’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO), joined the global community of NPPOs under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) in commemorating the 2025 International Day of Plant Health (IDPH). The event was marked by a national press briefing underscoring Nigeria’s continued commitment to safeguarding plant resources and enhancing safe trade in agricultural commodities.

During the address, the Comptroller General of NAQS reaffirmed Nigeria’s alignment with international phytosanitary principles. “Plant health is foundational to achieving food security, driving economic growth, and ensuring environmental resilience. As the NPPO of Nigeria, we remain steadfast in our role to prevent the introduction and spread of plant pests while facilitating safe international trade,” he stated.

The Comptroller General also highlighted the significance of IDPH as a vital platform to strengthen global coordination and awareness. “This observance offers an important opportunity to showcase how NPPOs like NAQS are implementing international standards to secure plant health. We are deeply grateful to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security for supporting a regulatory environment that empowers us to meet our IPPC obligations,” he said.

He further emphasized NAQS’s recent efforts, including enhanced surveillance systems, risk-based inspections, and capacity building for stakeholders across the agricultural value chain—all geared toward improving compliance with international phytosanitary measures and boosting Nigeria’s export readiness.

In conclusion, he called on fellow NPPOs, regional partners, and IPPC-affiliated bodies to deepen collaboration. “Our collective vigilance and cooperation are critical in ensuring the health of plants worldwide. Nigeria remains committed to advancing harmonized standards and best practices that will strengthen global trade pathways and plant protection systems.
