Publication date
10-05-2006
Description of the mark

A study was done in collaboration with New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL), the supplier of Dami oil palm seeds from Dami Oil Palm Research Station in West New Britain Province known as Dami Seeds and the tests were carried out in the DPI Plant Pathology Laboratories in Brisbane, Australia. The tests were using PCR following reports by a trading partner country that lethal yellowing phytoplasma has been detected on oil palm seeds from Papua New Guinea. To verify the above report, an independent laboratory was selected agreed upon by both parties. The laboratory would use the agreed method used by the laboratory of the trading partner. All of the 98 parent lines have been tested and found to negative. Samples were also taken from other oil palm, and pest list of oil palm and coconut have been collated and analysed. The known vector Myndus crudus (Homoptera: Cixxidae) has not been recorded in PNG. The National Agriculture Quarantine Authority (NAQIA) hereby advise trading partners that oil palm seeds from Papua New Guinea are hereby officially declared free of the lethal yellowing phytoplasma 16SrIV following the above test and regular surveillance and monitoring systems have been developed and are implemented to confirm pest freedom.
