Summary

Erwinia amylovora (Ea) was confirmed in 18 pear orchards and 4 apple orchards in Korea as of 24 August 2017 by molecular techniques. There orchards infected with Ea are located within a 16 km diameter in Anseong and Cheonan city, which is the same area of outbreak in 2015 and 2016. The first official survey in 2017 was conducted in 8 May - 19 May 2017 in 5km radius of the outbreak area of 2016. The Government of Republic of Korea established "Infected Areas" within 100m radius from the infected trees, "Control Areas" within 2km radius from the infected trees. All the host plants are destroyed in the Infected area, and monitoring and spraying of agricultural antibiotics and pesticide has been conducted in the Control and Regulated areas.

Two more official surveys on Ea were conducted in all the orchards with host plants nation-wide in 5 June - 16 June 2017 and in 3 July - 14 July 2017. The final survey (20 November - 1 December 2017) will be conducted and the result of the survey will be updated.

In 2016 Ea was detected in 16 pear orchards and 1 apple orchard (Anseong and Cheonan city ) in Rep. of Korea and all the host plants within 100m radius of the infected trees had been destroyed and the official eradication program is on-going.

Danger
The pathogen could be introduced by plant for planting and cause decrease of the yield of pear and apple. It is known that introduction by commercial fruits is unlikely.
