Summary

FINDING OF POTATO BROWN ROT. In May 2006 in harvested potato (for consumption) field in Alt?nova village of Bal?kesir province typical symptoms of brown rot were observed. Testing in laboratory indicated the presence of the brown rot bacterium by using IF, plating onto semiselective SMSA medium, biochemical and pathojenicity test methods. Real-time PCR was performed in Plant Protection Central Research Institute for confirmation of the bacterium presence. After detection, systematic surveys were begun in late spring and autumn harvested potato crops in this production area. As a results of testing, 163,6 ha in Alt?nova was found to be infested by the bacterium. FINDING OF BACTERIAL WILT OF TOMATO. In the summer of 2006 severe wilt symptoms of tomato plants in some tomato (fresh) fields in locality Batakova of Canakkale province were observed. IF, plating onto semiselective SMSA medium, biochemical, pathogenicity tests and real time PCR tests were performed. All tomato production areas in locality Batakova were surveyed and laboratory analyses were performed with suspected samples. 67,1 ha were found to be infested. The bacterium was detected also in canal water used in irrigation of infested fields.

Quarantine measures outlined in Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) which have been prepared in accordance with EU Control Directive (1998) were taken in infested potato and tomato production areas. The main measures include prohibition of production of solanaceauos plants and other host in infested areas, tracing and testing program to investigate the source of contamination and to prevent spread of the bacterium in new areas etc.

Danger
Information only. Outbreacks contained potatoes for consumption and fresh tomatoes. On potatoes it is first finding since 1995 when the bacterium has been found only in 5 field in Central Anatolia Region of Turkey and was succesfully eradicated. On tomato it is the first finding. The organism is found also in one irrigation canal in Canakkale province, Solanum nigrum and some other solanaceous weeds in the infested areas and it is subject to eradication where it is feasible.
