Geographical Distribution
The problem has spread to most of the banana producing areas since the last report in December 2009. At the same time active surveillance is still on going to determine the spread to current unaffected area.
Danger
Currently the problem is well managed through areal and ground spraying, along with cultural practices. However, given the nature of the fungus it may be a matter of time before it spreads to unaffected banana plantations. This inevitably will impact on the cost of management, hence increase cost of production to our farmers.
