Short Description

The Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection is the central competent authority with responsibilities inter alia in the following phytosanitary areas: - plant health (harmful organisms), including export certification and issuing of phytosanitary certificates; - registration, placing on the market and use of plant protection products (pesticides); - production, processing and placing on the market of agricultural seeds and plant propagating material; - technical requirements in relation to equipment for the application of plant protection products; - registration of producers, importers, traders and other operators, training of their responsible persons and their surveillance; etc. As NPPO the central competent authority deals with administrative, technical and development functions governing protection of plants and plant products against harmful organisms, including the internal market and international trade under the International Plant Protection Convention. Laboratories that carry out scientific and expert tasks and analysis of samples taken by public officers of the NPPO carrying out official controls are: 1. Slovenian Agricultural Institute: • detection and determination of plant harmful organisms (phytosanitary reference laboratory: nematology, phytopatology, entomology); • quality control analysis of PPPs and pesticide residue analysis in agricultural products of plant origin and contaminants in soil and agricultural products of plant origin; • certification body (planting material); • quality control of animal feed, honey and plant seed material. • Pest Risk Analysis (PRA), prognostic service, IPM center. 2. National Institute of Biology (phytosanitary reference laboratory): virology and bacteriology reference laboratory, plant harmful organisms, analysis of GM feed, food and seed; PRA. 3. Slovenian Institute for hop research and brewing: mycology reference laboratory and certification body (hop planting material), plant harmful organisms; PRA, prognostic service, IPM center. 4. Biotechnical faculty, Department of agronomy: Harmful organisms (phytosanitary); biological control agents 5. Regional Agriculture and Forestry institute, Nova Gorica: entomology reference laboratory, plant harmful organisms; PRA, prognostic service, IPM center. 6. Regional Agriculture and Forestry institute, Maribor: plant harmful organisms; prognostic service, IPM center. 7. Regional Agriculture and Forestry institute Novo mesto: plant harmful organisms; prognostic service, IPM center. 8. Slovenian Forestry Institute: forest phytopatology and entomology laboratory, PRA, monitoring and prognostic service. 9. Slovenian Forestry Service: forest monitoring service.
