Geographical Distribution
Various locations in Western Cape Province. Found in vineyards of the Olifants River and Vredendal areas.
Summary

The pest was detected by the South African Wine industry and reported to the NPPOZA in February 2008. The NPPOZA conducted diagnostic analysis and confirmed the pest reports. The NPPOZA is developing an action plan in collaboration with relevant industry. There are indications that the pest may have been in South Africa since 2006.

Danger
Aster yellows phytoplasma group has a potential host range of more than 300 kinds of plants. The risk of spread to other hosts via insect vectors is high. The particular vector in this case has not yet been identified.
