Summary

The Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI) discovered a packing site had been returning packing material which had carried imported tomato fruit, such as boxes, to UK growing sites and the outbreak was discovered as a result of a follow-up survey.

Eradication is being pursued through pheromone baited mass (water) trapping, insecticidal treatments, removal and destruction of infested tomato plants and fruits, hygienic waste disposal practices and removal of wild host plants in the immediate vicinity.

A crop break is expected on site around November. Other growing sites receiving packing material from the same packing site are being visited. July 2010 Fera has concluded that the current national position should be retained for the time being. Therefore, action will continue to be taken against findings at import and at growers^^ premises, aiming at eradication.
