Hosts

Confirmed hosts: Lycium chinense (ji berry or wolfberry), Solanum nigrum (black nightshade), Capsicum annuum (sweet pepper). A brief laboratory investigation failed to successfully transfer the mites to the following hosts: tomato, petunia and tobacco (also in the Solanaceae family).

Geographical Distribution

Intercepted on plants from 3 different, geographically separate, areas of the UK.

Summary

Continued surveillance and publicity to supplement publicity and advice already distributed through DEFRA and the gardening media. Destruction of any goji berry plants found to have been imported from outside the EU will continue due to the plant health risks and the fact that this is an illegal trade.

Danger

A considerable number of dormant �Goji� plants has been distributed in the UK via mail order sales. The origin of these plants was China, landed and cleared in the Netherlands and distributed from the Channel Islands. Considerable publicity has been given to the risks that may be presented by these illegal imports. Aceria kuko has now been found on 3 different plants from geographically separate areas of the UK. This is the first finding of this pest in the UK. The literature shows that Solanum nigrum and Capsicum annuum are alternate hosts
