Language and modality: The workshop will be held in English and Spanish (with interpretation). It will be in-person only.
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) global workshop on systems approaches aims to deepen knowledge and practical skills for designing, assessing, and implementing integrated pest risk management measures to facilitate safe trade of plants and plant products. This event will provide a platform for national plant protection organizations (NPPOs), regional plant protection organizations (RPPOs), industry representatives, and other interested parties who are considering, or currently developing and implementing, systems approach programs as alternatives to stand-alone measures for ensuring phytosanitary security in the trade of plants and plant products.
Participants will gain a stronger understanding of ISPM 14 (The use of integrated measures in a systems approach for pest risk management) and related IPPC standards, explore real-world examples and case studies, and engage in hands-on exercises using the IPPC Systems Approach Assessment Tools. The workshop will also provide opportunities to discuss challenges, lessons learned, and potential revisions to implementation materials, while promoting collaboration across the global phytosanitary community.
Coming from a proposal during the Nineteenth Session of the Commission of Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-19), the workshop is now a reality.

- Enhance understanding of systems approaches through case studies, exercises, and field demonstrations.
- Share experiences on development, recognition, and implementation of systems approaches among contracting parties.
- Increase awareness of available assessment tools, including the IPPC Systems Approach Assessment Tool.
- Strengthen collaboration among NPPOs, RPPOs, and industry stakeholders.
- Consider potential recommendations for improving ISPM 14 to strengthen phytosanitary safeguards.
- Identify additional system approach implementation material that could be developed.
