The IPPC Regional Workshop for Latin America

The IPPC Regional Workshop for Latin America was held 20-23 October 2015 in Lima, Peru. The Workshop was hosted by the Peruvian NPPO, organized by the Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and financially supported by COSAVE, OIRSA and the IPPC Secretariat. Seventeen representatives of the IPPC contracting parties and IICA staff attended the workshop, and the IPPC Secretariat participated remotely and through videoconference during the two last days of the meeting.

The 2nd IPPC Standards Committee in 2015: work to set international standards progresses

The 2nd IPPC Standards Committee (SC) convened 16-20 November 2015 at FAO headquarters in Rome. The meeting was chaired by Mr Bart Rossel (Australia), with presence of 22 out of 25 members and 4 observers. Following the introductions from the IPPC Secretary and Secretariat briefings, key discussions included: the review and approval of ISPMs, proposed revisions of the standard setting procedure and the discussion on the concept of commodity standards.

The 27th Technical Consultation among Regional Plan Protection Organizations

The 27th Technical Consultation (TC) among the Regional Plant Protection Organizations (RPPOs) was held 2-6 November 2015, in Memphis, USA. The meeting was organized by the North American Plan Protection Organizations (NAPPOs), with presence of all nine RPPOs’ representatives. The meeting was officially opened by Mr Osama El-Lissy, Deputy Administrator of the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of the USA by a video link. He welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of protecting agriculture and the natural environment, and facilitating safe trade. Great Success of the 2nd IPPC Global Symposium on ePhyto

The 2nd IPPC Global Symposium on ePhyto was held 9-13 November 2015 in Incheon, Republic of Korea, and was financially supported by the Government of Korea. About 80 participants attended the Symposium, who came from over 50 contracting parties of the Convention along with industry and multinational organizations. Mr. Suhyon Rho, the Governor of the Animal and plant Quarantine Agency, delivered the Welcome Address, Mr. Jingyuan Xia, the Secretary of IPPC Secretariat, did the Opening Remarks, and Ms. Kyu-Ock Yim, the Chair of CPM, made a presentation on the International Year of Plant Health 2020. Achievements of the 16th IPPC-APPPC Regional Workshop for Asia

The 16th IPPC-APPPC regional workshop for Asia on the review of draft ISPMs and key IPPC issues was organized from 19-23 October 2015 in Jeju, Republic of Korea, with participation of 35 delegates from 19 countries in the region. This is the 10th workshop hosted and funded by the Republic of Korea. The workshop was opened by Mr Suhyon Rho, Director General of the Department of Plant Quarantine, Rep. of Korea. WTO and FAO to Collaborate on Trade and Food Safety

The leaders of the WTO and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations announced on 2 November their agreement to collaborate on the issue of trade and food safety. WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva agreed at the FAO headquarters in Rome that the two organizations will look into how sanitary and phytosanitary standards and food safety can facilitate trade and promote development.
