A third year of the IPPC NRO Programme marked with success

The year 2017 was a third successful year for the National Reporting Obligations Programme (NRO). It was a third stable year in a row during which countries supplied above 240 new NRO reports through the International Phytosanitary Portal (IPP). To be precise 245 reports were uploaded in 2017, while 244 reports in 2016 and 246 reports in 2015. In comparison in the year 2014 only 165 reports were uploaded on the IPP.

It clearly shows that a set of measures implemented within the NRO Programme that started in the middle of 2014 has been effective.

Great Progress on the Development of IPPC Diagnostic Protocols

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Technical Panel on Diagnostic Protocols (TPDP) met from 05 to 09 February 2018 at the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) in Paris, France. The main objective of the meeting was to revise draft diagnostic protocols (DPs) in various stages of development, discuss several horizontal issues related to DPs and review the TPDP work programme with strategic discussions on the future of the IPPC DPs. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is launching until the 7th of March 2018 a survey on climate change and emerging risks for food safety, including plant and animal health. Your inputs are very precious as they will feed a new method for identifying, ranking and prioritizing emerging risks in the EU for food/feed safety, as well as plant and animal health, potentially related to climate change.

New IPPC Secretariat guide Preparing a national phytosanitary capacity development strategy now available!

The IPPC Secretariat published a new guide Preparing a national phytosanitary capacity development strategy available in English, French and Spanish. This guide provides indications on the various steps and on tools to conduct a Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) leading to the development of a national phytosanitary capacity development strategy.

Kenya’s Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation Stakeholders’ Consultations successfully held

The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), the National Plant Protection Organisation of Kenya conducted a stakeholders’ consultative workshop of the Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) application process on January 18, 2018. IPPC e-Learning Course a Fruit of a Successful collaboration between IPPC and UN Environment

The IPPC Secretariat has been working together with UN Environment within the UN Environment Multilateral Environment Agreements Knowledge Management Initiative for the last several months on a variety of issues. This successful collaboration between both organizations resulted in developing an e-learning course “Introduction to the International Plant Protection Convention”. UN Environment provided free technical assistance and support to develop the course.

The course is available on the InforMEA e-learning platform. The IPPC ePhyto Steering Group (ESG) met on 21st and 27th just pre-and post-the 3rd IPPC Global Symposium on ePhyto held from 22-26 January 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 3rd IPPC Global Symposium on ePhyto was held from 22-26 January 2108 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with the Theme “ePhyto and Trade Facilitation”. The Symposium was jointly organized by the IPPC Secretariat, the Malaysian Department of Agriculture, the Asia & Pacific Plant Protection Commission (APPPC), and the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. e-learning course “Introduction to the International Plant Protection Convention” is available

The IPPC Secretariat would like to announce that an e-learning course “Introduction to the International Plant Protection Convention” was created and made available on the InforMEA e-learning platform. The course is the result of a collaboration with UN Environment, within the UN Environment Multilateral Environment Agreements Knowledge Management Initiative, that provided technical assistance in the course development free of charge.

InforMEA harvests and displays a series of data obtained from different Multilateral Environmental Agreements including introductory courses. Major Achievements of the IPPC Secretariat in Promotion of Trade Facilitation in 2017

Great achievements were obtained by the IPPC Secretariat in promoting trade facilitation in 2017 through the efforts of the IPPC ePhyto Project Team and the support of all Units (Teams) as well as the assistance of all Task Forces. Among many others, the major achievements are highlighted as follows:

The SDTF pilot project on ePhyto was successfully conducted with the active involvement of participating stakeholders and NPPOs. The requirements for deployment of the IPPC ePhyto hub and the generic ePhyto national system (GeNS) was finalized for testing and demonstration.
