Rome, 7 April 2021. The Bureau of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) held its fifth meeting of 2021, first under the new chairmanship of Mr Lucien Konan Kuamé, and discussed a number of important engagements for the community of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). Mr Avetik Nersisyan, IPPC Secretary Officer-in-Charge, congratulated the newly elected chairperson along with Mr John Greifer, elected vice-Chairperson at the fifteenth session of the CPM (CPM-15).

The CPM Bureau and IPPC Secretariat thanked Mr Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, IPPC contact point for Mexico and Director-General of SENASICA, for his contribution and tremendous stamina during his extended period as CPM Chairperson, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Mr Ahmed Kamal El-Attar received a warm welcome by the CPM Bureau as latest member for the Near East and North Africa region.

The discussion focused on several preliminary governance issues, including the IPPC Secretariat staffing and the funding allocations to strengthen IPPC communication as priorities for 2021. Moreover, the CPM Bureau agreed to broaden participation of observers replacement members to its meetings as well as to other IPPC subsidiary bodies with the purpose of building capacity and facilitating future transitions.
