Rome, 9 November 2020. The CPM Bureau held its ninth virtual meeting over the course of the year, coming up with some important decisions regarding the fifteenth session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-15), taking place in March 2021. The CPM Bureau decided to hold an entirely virtual CPM-15 taking account of the COVID-19 pandemic. The IPPC Secretariat sought additional guidance from FAO Legal Services and soon IPPC contacting parties will be requested to validate such decision.

The CPM Bureau also discussed about the Strategic Planning Group extraordinary session, which took place on the following day, clarifying some key points regarding the adoption of the IPPC Strategic Framework 2020 – 2030 and its development agenda. The CPM Bureau agreed that the IPPC community would have to stand up for the new challenges that the post-pandemic international community will face. The CPM Bureau recalled that the IPPC core functions (standard setting, implementation, and communication and partnerships) would have to continue to operate in the new context. The CPM Bureau welcomed the strong legacy that is continuing to build up thanks to the global engagement of stakeholders during the International Year of Plant Health, looking forward to the FAO Council’s discussion on the proposal for an International Day of Plant Health.
