The IPPC Holding the Second PCE Facilitators Training in Thailand

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat organized and held the second training for the Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) Facilitators from 8 – 19 August 2016 in Chang Mai, Thailand under the Standards Trade and Development Facility (STDF) project 401: Training of Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) Facilitators.

The STDF project 401 seeks to improve national-level coordination and coherence of plant protection programmes through improved needs assessment and action planning. The aim of the project is to train a pool of individuals to facilitate phytosanitary needs assessment and action planning processes using the IPPC Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation (PCE) tool.

Strengthening of Cooperation between the IPPC and STDF

Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary, had a meeting with Mr Melvin Spreij, the Secretary of the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) on 15 June 2016, at FAO-HQ in Rome, Italy. Mr Craig Fedchock (the IPPC Coordinator), Ms Sarah Brunel (the IPPC Implementation Officer) and Mr Marko Benovic (the IPPC Finance Officer), also attended the meeting. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss a number of topics related to projects funded by STDF, projects ongoing and potential next steps for moving forward in the relationship between the two organizations.

IPPC Regional Workshop for the Near East and North Africa (2015)

The 2015 IPPC Regional Workshop for the Near East and North Africa was held 14-17 September, in Amman, Jordan, and there were 40 participants from 14 contracting parties and West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Workshop was organized by the FAO Regional Office for the Near East (FAO-RNE), the Jordan Plant Protection Organization and the IPPC Secretariat; and it was funded by FAO-NRE as well as from the IPPC Trust Fund.

IPPC Regional Workshop for the Pacific (2015)

The Workshop was organized by the Pacific Plant Protection Organization (PPPO) for 29-31 July 2015, with the participation of representatives from 19 National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) in that region. The Workshop was funded with assistance from the Pacific Horticultural and Market Access project (PHAMA), and financed by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. A capacity development training session, range of side sessions, market places places and special topics will take place during the week of the tenth session of the Commission on the Phytosanitary Measures (16 – 20 March 2015) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The Republic of Korea contributes towards phytosanitary capacity development in South-East Asian countries

The signing ceremony for the 3-year FAO project “Support to Capacity Development in Implementation of Plant Pest Surveillance and Information management in South-East Asian Countries” took place on 25 April 2013. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea contributed nearly US$ 1.8 million towards this project to strengthen the capacity of NPPOs (National Plant Protection Organizations) of developing countries in the South-East Asian region. Italian Rural Development Directorate hosts first meeting of International Plant Protection Convention’s Capacity Development Committee

December 2012, Rome - The Rural Development Directorate of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies hosted the launch of the new Capacity Development Committee of the International Plant Protection Convention. The International Plant Protection Convention is an international treaty hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations that includes 177 member countries and this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Call for nomination of members of the Capacity Development Committee (CDC).

The International Plant Protection Convention(IPPC) Secretariat is soliciting nominations for appropriately qualified candidates to be members of the IPPC Capacity Development Committee(CDC).

At its 7th Session (CPM-7) the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures agreed to create the IPPC Capacity Development Committee (CDC) as a successor to the Expert Working Group for Phytosanitary Capacity Development (EWG-CD) that has been in existence since 2010. The terms of reference for selection of members and rules of procedure for the CDC were also adopted by CPM-7. The second Meeting of the Expert Working Group (EWG) on Phytosanitary Capacity Development took place in Montego Bay, Jamaica, 23-27th of May 2011. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) had together with each FAO region delegates participating (unfortunately except Africa). Two observers representing the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture(IICA) participated in the meeting.

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Expert Working Group on Phytosanitary Capacity Development was created to review and refine the Phytosanitary Capacity Development Operational Plan and to assist the Secretariat with developing national phytosanitary capacity.

Expert working group maintains momentum for phytosanitary capacity development

Group phot of the EWG As agreed at the 5th Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures, an expert working group (EWG) was convened 25 – 29 October at FAO Headquarters in Rome to review and refine the phytosanitary capacity development operational plan. Experts from Australia, Côte d'Ivoire, Jamaica, Malaysia, Netherlands, Sudan and the United States of America participated.
