The IPPC Secretariat is delighted to announce the release of the 2017 IPPC Annual Report. The Report was developed by the IPPC Secretariat and is available on the IPPC website in the Media Kit page at this link.
The 2017 IPPC Annual Report contains information on the main IPPC activities, events and meetings that took place in 2017 and it includes a Foreword by the CPM Chairperson and the IPPC Secretary. It is composed of the following chapters: 1) Background; 2) Progress Report; 3) Highlights; 4) Chronicle of Events; and 5) Reference Material.

As you are aware, the thirteenth session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-13) is approaching, and will be held at FAO HQs in Rome from 16 to 20 April 2018.
One of the crucial topics in the agenda for CPM-13 is the discussion over the IPPC Strategic Framework for 2020-2030. Contracting parties attending CPM-13 will have a valuable opportunity to provide strategic feedback on this essential document.

The European and Food Safety Authority (EFSA) runs an innovative international initiative to discuss emerging issues for food and feed safety in the EU influenced by climate change. The meeting to develop a draft ISPM on Guidance on pest risk management took place in Qawra, Malta from 05 to 09 of March 2018, and was chaired by Mr Harry Arijs (European Commission). The meeting was organized by the IPPC Secretariat and was hosted by the national plant protection organization (NPPO) of Malta. Mr Sharlo Camilleri, Director of the Plant Protection Directorate, head of the NPPO of Malta, opened the meeting by welcoming all participants to Qawra and he expressed his appreciation for supporting the IPPC by co-organizing the meeting.

Andean government representatives discussed on 7-8 March 2018 in Quito, Ecuador the challenges they face and the successes they celebrate in setting international standards used in trading plant products and food internationally. Contact points, representing members of the Codex Alimentarius and parties to the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), shared their experiences while seeking ways to boost subregional cooperation during a workshop, convened by the Secretariats of the two UN organizations and Corporación IG-DE.

A CPM Bureau teleconference meeting was held on 8th March 2018 with participation of six Bureau members and all Core Team Members of the IPPC Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by the CPM Chairperson, Ms Lois Ransom (Australia), and opened by the IPPC Secretary, Mr Jingyuan Xia.

The Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Committee held a thematic session on pest-free areas (PFAs) on 27 February prior to the 71st regular meeting of the SPS Committee (1-2 March 2018). Session took place at the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland.

The report of the Expert Working Group Meeting on Revision of ISPM 8 (Determination of Pest Status in an Area), held in September 2017 in Hanoi, Viet Nam, has been posted today and is available at the following link: https://www.ippc.int/en/publications/85619/
The IPPC is producing a guide on pest risk communication for plant health and is looking for case studies and photographs as examples to help illustrate the guide. The case studies should be very straightforward and no longer than 500 words. They should highlight activities conducted in plant health pest risk communication, their benefits and the decision making process.
The selected case studies will be edited and formatted and included as boxes in the guide to be published electronically by the end of 2018. Individuals and institutions providing the case studies will be acknowledged.
