Fourth meeting of IYPH Steering Committee held at FAO HQs

From 23 to 25 April 2018 the International Year of Plant Health Steering Committee of the IPPC (“IYPH StC”) held its fourth meeting at FAO headquarters in Rome.

Led by Chairperson Ralf LOPIAN (Finland), and supported by the IPPC Secretariat, twenty participants and six invited stakeholders took part in the meeting.

Mr Shoki AL-DOBAI, Integration and Support Team Leader, welcomed participants on behalf of the IPPC Secretariat and recalled the good progress made towards the IYPH proclamation, which is planned be discussed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in October/November 2018. 16th Congress of the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union (March 2020, Cyprus)

The upcoming Congress of the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union entitled “Safeguarding Mediterranean Plant Health” will be held in Limassol, Cyprus, on 23th-27th March , 2020. The meeting, organized by the Mediterranean Phytopatological Union and the Cyprus University of Technology under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture of Cyprus, promotes dissemination of the latest scientific advances and encourages dialogue and collaboration between researchers interested in all aspects of Phytopathology.

The Successful Completion of the Thirteenth Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-13)

The Thirteenth Session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM-13) was successfully completed on 20th April 2018 in FAO-HQs, Rome, Italy. After adoption of the Report on CPM-13, Mr Jingyuan Xia, IPPC Secretary Xia, made conclusion remarks by highlighting ten major achievements obtained in this CPM-13:

CPM-13 Special Topics Session on Plant Health and Environment Protection

A Special Topics Session on Plant Health and Environment Protection was held on 19 April 2018 during the 13th Session of the Commission for Phytosanitary Measures. The Session aimed at promoting the IPPC 2018 annual theme “Plant Health and Environment Protection”. Four speakers briefed the CPM audience and clearly demonstrated the relevance and linkage between plant health, environmental protection, climate change, food security and human health.

The CPM Bureau meeting held at the margin of the CPM-13 in April 2018

The CPM Bureau meeting was held on 11th-13th April before CPM-13 and on 20 April 2018 after CPM-13 with participation of seven Bureau members as well as the representatives from the IPPC Secretariat and FAO Legal Office. The meeting was chaired by the CPM Chairperson, Ms Lois Ransom (Australia), and opened by Mr Jingyuan Xia, the IPPC Secretary.

CPM-13 side session on gene sequencing and molecular technologies

Successfully organized by the IPPC and the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) Secretariats on 17 April 2018 at FAO HQ, the session informed IPPC contracting parties and stakeholders about gene sequencing and molecular technologies for plant pests diagnosis. Early diagnosis and rapid response are crucial in any effort to reduce the risk of entry and spread of plant pests into an area.

CPM-13 delegates deepen their knowledge on resource mobilization for plant health

The IPPC Secretariat organized a CPM side session on Resource mobilization for Plant Health on Wednesday 18 April.

Ms Sarah Brunel, Implementation Facilitation Officer chaired the session and recalled that having the appropriate financial resources for NPPOs to implement the IPPC and its standards sustainably and effectively is an long-lasting challenge. NPPOs often struggle for support and the financial resources to conduct their activities and may not be fully aware of all resource mobilization possibilities.

CPM-13 Side session on Collaboration with Research Organizations held at FAO HQs

The Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM), in their thirteenth session, successfully adopted five International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) as follows:

1) Revision of ISPM 6 (Surveillance)

2) 2015 and 2016 amendments to ISPM 5 (Glossary of phytosanitary terms)

3) Revision of Annex 1 and Annex 2 to ISPM 15, for inclusion of the phytosanitary treatment sulphuryl fluoride fumigation and revision of the dielectric heating section

The Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency recognized as the 10th Regional Plant Protection Organization during CPM-13

The Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA) was recognized as a Regional Plant Protection Organization (RPPO) by CPM-13 being held this week at FAO HQs in Rome. The IPPC Community attending the CPM congratulated and wished the newly recognized organization a fruitful work.
