Environmental protection and plant health: A new IPPC factsheet explains the link

You cannot protect the environment without also safeguarding plant health. When plant pests and diseases spread into new areas they seriously damage entire ecosystems, putting at risk biological diversity and the environment itself. Tiny and lethal at the same time, plant pests and invasive alien species have been recently identified as the main driver of biodiversity loss. Pests are also responsible for losses of up to USD 220 billion in agricultural trade each year and the loss of 40 percent of the global food crop production.

Plant Nematologists and laboratories – opportunity at ANSES!

The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) Plant Health Laboratory is recruiting one technician and one scientist for three-year positions in its Nematology Unit.

The laboratory is located in Le Rheu (near Rennes, west part of France), and the lab is in charge of identifying and characterizing regulated pests and operates the European Union Reference Laboratory for nematodes.

Bactrocera dorsalis - New IPPC Diagnostic Protocol adopted

The IPPC Standards Committee has adopted a new diagnostic protocol (DP) on behalf of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures. The adoption of the DP 29: Bactrocera dorsalis comes at the closing of the DP Notification Period on 20 February 2019.

This new DP will help countries prevent the entry or establishment of harmful fruit flies affecting numerous fruit species worldwide ...

Developing capacity in pest risk analysis and market access for francophone African countries in collaboration with COLEACP

25 January 2019, Dakar - Many African countries seek to develop capacity in pest risk analysis, both to protect their territories from pests, and to get access to international markets by more fully understanding the requirements of importing countries.

The IPPC Secretariat therefore prepared and delivered a five-day interactive training course for the COLEACP (Comité de liaison Europe-Afrique-Caraïbes-Pacifique) on these topics. The course took place in Saly, Dakar from 21 to 25 January 2019 and focused on:

29 January 2019, Geneva - The ePhyto Project Advisory Committee met for the fourth time on 29 January 2019 at the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Since the last meeting in Rome during the summer of 2018, the ePhyto Solution project has advanced significantly.

The Secretariat proudly presented the Generic ePhyto National System, also known as “GeNS”. 30 January 2019, Geneva - The ePhyto Industry Advisory Group (IAG) met for the fourth time at the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland on 30 January 2019. IAG participants included the leaders of international NGOs representing the global grains, seeds, flowers, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, wood products and cotton industries.
