The ash tree is likely to be wiped out in Europe, according to the largest-ever survey of the species. The trees are being killed off by the fungal disease ash-dieback along with an invasive beetle called the emerald ash borer. Metrosideros polymorpha is the dominant tree, and foundation, of native Hawaiian forests. Sadly, over the past 2-3 years, a new fungal disease (a Ceratocystis species) has spread rapidly across the Island of Hawai'i, where it has killed trees over much of their range.
