NPPOs Invited to participate in ePhyto Business Model Survey

Yesterday, on 14 September letters were distributed to all NPPOs inviting them to participate in the ePhyto Business Model Survey. This survey will help the Secretariat determine the best business model for the ePhyto Solution project. The Secretariat kindly requests all NPPOs to participate in the survey.

African Grain Trade Summit

The East Africa Grain Council and International Grain Trade Coalition is hosting the 7th African Grain Trade Summit (AGTS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 5-7 October 2017. The AGTS is a biennial high-level, internationally-recognized grain industry conference that brings together important state and non-state grain sector stakeholders from across the African continent and beyond for discussions about key issues and emerging trends in the grain sector on the continent. During the Summit the hosts will also hold a short session on ePhyto. More information may be found at the AGTS website.

Registration opened for the online Course on integrated management of Huanglongbing of citrus using Taiwanese methodology

The Regional International Organization for Plant Protection and Animal Health (OIRSA) and the Taiwanese International Cooperation and Development Fund have developed a course on integrated management of Citrus Greening Disease, also known as Huanglongbing (HLB). The course aims to develop participants’ technical, biosecurity and relevant technological capacities to manage HLB using an integrated approach and ensure the healthy production of citrus. The provisional Agenda of the Standards Committee (SC) meeting is available at the IPP Calendar at: .

The meeting is taking place at FAO, Rome, Italy from 13 to 17 November 2017.

The draft ISPMs and draft Specifications to be discussed on the meeting will be available for contracting parties (CPs) and the regional plant protection organizations (RPPOs) at in the restricted area of the IPP in due course.

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat would like to hereby announce that the 3rd IPPC Global Symposium on ePhyto is to be hosted by Malaysia on the 22-26th of January 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, supported by the Asia & Pacific Plant Protection Commission (APPPC). This event will be partially funded through the Australian contribution to the IPPC, as well as funds allocated by the APPPC. The Symposium theme will be “ePhyto & Trade Facilitation”, aligned with development and piloting of the Hub and Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS). Agenda for Expert Working Group on the Revision of ISPM 8 posted!

The agenda for the Expert Working Group (EWG) on the Revision of ISPM 8: Determination of pest status in an area (2009-005) is available at

The meeting will be held in Hanoi, Viet Nam from 18 to 23 September 2017.

The EWG will work on the revision of ISPM 8 following the tasks outlined in the approved Specification 59. The outcomes of the meeting will be presented to the Standards Committee (SC) in May 2018.

The report of the 2017 Standards Committee Working Group (SC-7) meeting (Rome, 15 - 19 May, 2017) has now been posted. You can find the report on the IPP at this link. The 2017 SC-7 revised the following four draft ISPM under the second consultation, which will close on the 30 September 2017:

  • 2016 Draft amendments to ISPM 5: Glossary of Phytosanitary Terms (1994-001)
  • Revision of ISPM 6: Surveillance (2009-004)
  • Requirements for the use of temperature treatments as a phytosanitary measure (2014-005)

Dr. John Hedley launches the Biosecurity Information Facility Portal.

The Biosecurity Information Facility Portal ( was officially launched on 9 August 2017 by John Hedley, Principal Advisor, New Zealand. It was prepared by the Pacific Community (SPC) and it hosts the biosecurity operating procedures for the 22 island countries of the Pacific Plant Protection Organisation. It is an internet based hands-on tool designed for use by biosecurity border officers to carry out everyday duties relating to protecting the isolated fragile borders of the South West Pacific island nations.

Draft diagnostic protocols (DPs) under DP notification period

Two draft diagnostic protocols (DPs) are currently under the DP notification period:

  • Phytophthora ramorum (2004-013)
  • Tomato spotted wilt virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus and Watermelon silver mottle virus (2004-019).

The DP notification period was opened on 1 July and will close on 15 August. Contracting parties have 45 days to review the draft DPs and submit an objection, if any, along with a technical justification and suggestions for improvement of the approved DP. If no objection is received, the DP is considered adopted by the SC on behalf of the CPM.
